MOSAIC CAPITAL SERVICES by ARJUN DARU
Summer 2018 - Mumbai, India
Internship
My experience as a Mosaic Capital Services internMosaic Capital Services is a boutique investment banking firm, which offers Private Equity, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Strategic Advisory services. Mosaic operates primarily within India, though it works with both domestic and international investors and companies. The company is largely sector-agnostic, but has a number of specializations in fields such as Information Technology, Pharmaceuticals, and Industrial Products.
During my time here, I worked on Research and Analytics for Mosaic, looking at companies on both sides of investment rounds and accumulating extensive information regarding a variety of different industries. As a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas at Dallas in Global Business with a concentration in Finance, this position was an amazing opportunity for me; one which I was extremely excited for.
I was given some advice from a family member shortly after my internship began:
“As good as the market may look on paper, another country is still another country, and you have to know the culture before you do anything.”In my experiences in client meeting as well as reading Indian news and business reviews, I discovered that many business strategies, practices, and customs in India differ vastly from their equivalents in America. I learned that where one advertising strategy might work well in America, it would fail in India due to the different social values and norms.
Besides conducting research and analytics, I was given the incredible opportunity to attend client meetings, which offered me an experience much more significant than I had expected. In attending these meeting, I was able to see a side of business interactions which I hadn’t before, and came to realize how much even tiny social dynamics play a role in the outcome of the meetings and the impressions of each party.
The experience as a whole was life-changing, and I will never forget it. Living in India for such a stretch of time and actively being a part of the work force gave me a perspective of the country completely different than that of my previous visits as a tourist. I felt more in touch with the people and even my own culture, something which I didn’t realize I wanted so much.
I was able to learn a lot about investments and finances that I did not know or did not fully understand prior to this experience. This information has changed the way I look at companies in my day-to-day life and has taught me how to make my own inferences about them, which is a skill I have realized can always be improved upon.
A special thanks to Professor Hubert Zydorek, the director of the Global Business program in the Jindal School of Management at UT Dallas, for consistently supporting my efforts before and during this internship. His guidance has helped me find my passion for international business.
There are a few people I would like to thank at Mosaic. Firstly, I would like to thank Radhika Rajesth and Shreevats Agarwal, they went above and beyond to help the intern who was as new to the world of finance as he was to the office. Their insight and feedback helped me gain knowledge about the job and the industry to a much higher degree. Beyond work, they made my experience accumulating to Mumbai life easier than it had any right to be. A final thank you to Vinay Shah, founder of Mosaic Capital and the reason I had this opportunity. His tutelage and mentorship has changed the way I intend to manage my life and career for the better
As I begin my Senior Year at the University of Texas at Dallas, I enter it knowing that the experience and knowledge that I have gained this summer through this internship will benefit me wherever I choose to go after college. The lessons learned were never far apart and I am grateful for such an incredible opportunity.
